Ashish Kumar, the General Manager at Hyatt Regency, is a problem solver who converts challenges into opportunities.

Ashish Kumar, the General Manager at Hyatt Regency Kathmandu, has an outgoing personality and is completely dedicated to his work. He describes himself as a focused, disciplined problem solver who converts challenges into opportunities.

Having worked in the hospitality industry for more than 23 years, his contribution to the hotel sector is quite admirable. Kumar shares how he enjoys new challenges that require him to deal with diverse mindsets and emotions, which is why he chose the hospitality sector as a career path. He completed his Diploma in Hotel and Catering Management from the International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) in 1999 and finished his Business Management course from All India Council for Management Studies in 2001. He started his hospitality career with Jaypee Palace Hotel, Agra, India as Front Office as a telephone operator.

He values his colleagues and understands their opinions are equally important. Kumar is an excellent leader who constantly motivates and mentors his team to achieve better growth. “A leader is not someone who leads the masses, is self-centred, and achieves his own goals, but s/he is someone who can lead from the front and take the entire accountability”, he shares. “Calmness, focused, far-sighted, continuously evaluating and evolving and challenging the status quo. These are the qualities you have to possess if you want to lead a team, especially in the hospitality industry.”

When asked what the toughest part of managing a hotel is, he replies, “I’ve always wanted to be a leader. In my professional life, I enjoy managing a large group of people. However, one of the most difficult aspects to deal with, in my opinion, is balancing individual job responsibilities with time spent overseeing others.”

“General Manager is more than just a job title; it is a responsibility to run an entire management system while improving efficiency and increasing departmental profits. “So, I would never compromise on my self-discipline and time management, not just in this position, but in any position I would take,” he added.

Despite his hectic schedule from morning to evening, he believes in living a healthy life and maintains a well-balanced routine focused on physical and mental well-being as well as brain sharpening. After working in various positions, he ensures that the key to success is contentment, the happiness of various stakeholders, and the mapping of KPIs.

“I believe that self-discipline and time management are the most important aspects for any post in order to grow yourself,” he says. “There are lots of learning experiences while working as a General Manager at a hotel but one of the biggest ones is integrating a team to work for one small goal.”

When asked who/what motivates him to do better everyday, he shares, “I appreciate all of my mentors who motivate, encourage, support, and guide me as my most important role model.”
