The Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal is a landlocked country located in south Asia. Nepal has seven federal states and 77 districts. In total Nepal has 43 airports and among all those airports these are major eight airports in Nepal.
TIA (Tribhuvan International Airport)
The one and only international airport of Nepal TIA, it is about 5 kilometers from the center of the Kathmandu. The airport was previously known as Gauchaur airport and renamed by King Mahendra in 1955 as Tribhuvan International Airport in memory to his father. The airport has been in operation since 1949. In the early days the airport had grass runway, concrete runway was made in 1957 and has been extended several times. The airport has one domestic and one international terminal, the airport is hub for several domestic airlines and over 30 international airlines. The airport usually faces over crowd of aircrafts so; government has already started to extend the airport.
Lukla Airport also known as Tenzing Hillary airport is located in the lukla, Solukhumbu District. The airport is at an elevation of 2,845 m above sea level and is infamous as one of the extreme airports of the world. The airport was built by Edmund Hillary in 1964 and the runway was paved in 2001. Thousands of tourists pour in Lukla every year as it is the gateway to Everest. The flights only take place during daylight hours in clear weather. This small domestic airport is only suitable for small fixed wing aircrafts and helicopter. Due to the unbalanced landscape, High winds, clouds and changing weather makes this airport one the dangerous airport of the world. The airport is guarded and patrolled by Nepali armed police.
Established on 4 July 1958 pokhara airport is five kilometers from the center of the city. The surface of the runway is paved with asphalt and has a length of 4700 ft. currently the flight line of Pokhara airport is not that big and can only eight propeller planes at a time. This regional airport is about to be an international airport, as it is often used as diversion airport for the country’s main airport ‘TIA’. As planned by government pokhara airport is to be the Nepal’s second international airport.
Biratnagar Airport is a major airport in the eastern region of Nepal. It is located five kilometer away from city of pokhara, the airport was established on 6 July 1958. The surface of the runway is paved with concrete and has a length of 5000 ft. Biratnagar Airport is in the largest industrial region so the airport has daily flights. Biratnagar Airport is expected to be upgraded to a regional international airport in the coming future.
Gautam Buddha Airport also known as Bhairahawa Airport is located in the Rupandehi District of Nepal. Gautam Buddha Airport was opened in 1958 and is currently being upgraded to international standards. Gautam Buddha Airport is going to be Nepal’s second and largest international Airport
