Colours, Culture, and Celebration- Holi in Nepal

12, Mar 2025 | nepaltraveller.com

Holi, the festival of colours, is one of the most vibrant and joyous celebrations in Nepal.

Marking the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil, Holi brings people together in a whirlwind of colours, music, and laughter. Celebrated with great enthusiasm, it is a time when social boundaries blur, and everyone joins in the festivities with open hearts.

The festival has its roots in Hindu mythology, particularly the story of Prahlad and Holika, symbolizing the triumph of devotion over evil. People begin the celebrations by lighting bonfires on Holika Dahan, signifying the burning away of negativity. The next day, the real fun begins as people take to the streets, smearing each other with colours, throwing water balloons, and dancing to traditional and modern beats.

In Nepal, Holi is celebrated on two different days. The Hilly region, including Kathmandu, celebrates on March 12, while the Terai region observes it on March 13. Cities like Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan turn into colourful hubs where locals and tourists alike immerse themselves in the festivities. Families gather for special delicacies such as gujiya, malpuwa, and thandai, making the occasion even more delightful.

On this joyous occasion, Nepal Traveller wishes everyone a Happy Holi! May this festival bring happiness, prosperity, and colours into your life. Whether you celebrate in the lively streets of Kathmandu or the warm plains of the Terai, may your Holi be filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories!
