Mango Chili Thai Cafe is a casual restaurant serving genuine Thai food with a twist
In recent times, malls in Kathmandu have advanced quickly to include the finest restaurants in town. Mango Chili Thai Cafe is one such eatery on the second floor of Labim Mall, the city’s newest shopping centre. A casual restaurant serving genuine Thai food with a twist, Mango Chili is an outlet of the Mango Tree chain in Thailand.
For those looking for some spicy, sweet and scrumptious food, this year-old restaurant offers a variety of unique Thai dishes in a retro, industrial setting. Bright red and a vibrant yellow adorn its modern furniture while the colourful painting that depicts a floating market in Thailand catches eyes, even from outside through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. As you walk further into the restaurant, the ceiling lights glow under the rustic interiors adding a unique touch to the cafe’s ambience. Upbeat music from the Top 100 charts across the world playing the background makes for the perfect atmosphere to grab a quick bite.
To start your journey through Thailand, the Chicken and Lemongrass Herb salad is a mildly spiced salad topped with ginger, lime leaves and red chillies. Like most Thai salads, this one has a sweet but spicy dressing that gives it a watery texture, a refreshing way to keep yourself cool and hydrated amidst the hot temperatures in Thailand. For a bittersweet adventure of flavours, the Thai Iced tea is a drink with a distinctive taste which is a great palate cleanser.
When we talk about Thai food, the first thing that comes to mind is Tom-Yum, a type of hot and sour Thai soup, which is usually cooked with shrimp (prawn). The soup is spicy enough to tantalize your taste buds and full of flavour. We chose the original shrimp version but Mango Chili offers a choice of chicken or mushroom as well.
For the main course, the Pineapple rice is a fan-favourite that is served in half a pineapple scooped. The flavours incorporate a bit of Indian as the dish uses curry powder to flavour the rice. Cashews, pineapples and other diced vegetables make the dish completely vegetarian. And if you’re not used to eating rice without gravy, the Red Curry, which comes in a choice of chicken, vegetables or mixed seafood is the perfect accompaniment to the succulent bed of rice. The standard curry comes with pineapple, potatoes, bamboo shoots
If Thai cuisine doesn’t really appease your taste buds, then the Deep Fried Trout with Sweet and Sour Sauce might be the one for you. A whole trout, fried served with a sweet and sour sauce, which includes capsicums, diced veggies and a garnish of greens on top. This particular dish has different taste to the rest of the food on the menu and stands out as something distinct with a Thai twist.
End your meal with the Coffee Panna Cotta With Caramel Custard, a delicate Italian dessert of sweetened cream thickened with gelatin. Flavoured with coffee on a pool of caramel goodness, the dessert is a soft, creamy delight for your taste buds.
Frequented by workers from nearby companies, Mango Chili is a casual place for lunch amongst colleagues, friends and family. The cafe-restaurant theme makes it easy for visitors to grab a bite any time of the day.
