Jitiya is not just a religious festival for women but also a celebration of strength, community, and unwavering love for their families
In Kathmandu, the Tharu and Madheshi communities recently gathered at the National Dance Hall and Nepal Tourism Board to celebrate Jitiya, a significant festival for Nepali married women from Mithilanchal and the Tharu regions of Eastern and Central Nepal.
The Nirjala fast, which women observe during Ashtami, sometimes for two days, in order to obtain blessings for their offspring, is the focal point of the celebration. The fast, called Khar Jitia, is said to shield kids, especially the ones who have survived serious accidents. Families make sure their loved ones are fed by having a dinner of fish and millet chapatti on the eve of the fast, a special Tharu custom.
Adding to the celebration, Tharu women perform the traditional Jhamta dance, symbolizing devotion and cultural pride.
For these women, Jitiya is not just a religious festival but a celebration of strength, community, and unwavering love for their families. Through their fasting and devotion, they honor their heritage, carrying forward blessings of health, protection, and happiness.
