Mata Tirtha Aunsi is a festival celebrated in Nepal that marks love and gratitude to mothers. It falls on the Nepali first month, Baisakh. People pay homage to their mothers by presenting various gifts. Generally, people around Kathmandu visit Mata Tirtha (a holy place 9 Kilometers North West of Kathmandu) to perform different kinds of rituals to their deceased mother.
The Nepali Mother's Day is also known as Aama ko Mukh Herne Din which in English translates to 'a day to look at your mother's face'. Children wake up early, take bath and come to visit their mother early in the morning with gifts or sweets.
Mother’s day is revered in Nepali society as it is the day the children express their gratitude to their mothers. It is the day to make mothers feel important and loved for their sacrifices, love and hard work.
