As the sun’s gentle caress graces the heavens, painting the sky with hues of gold and rose, the lake becomes a living canvas, mirroring celestial artistry.
The Rara Lake Trek unveils an enchanting journey, an odyssey distinct from the well-trodden paths of mountain expeditions. Embarking on the Rara Lake Trek carries explorers into the heart of the Northwest’s mountainous embrace. The lake’s expanse, spanning 10.8 sq km with a depth of 167 m, becomes a mirror for the skies, and its turquoise waters beckon wanderers to a hypnotic dance.

Itinerary of the Rara Trek
Day 1: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj
Nepalgunj, located in western Nepal, is a significant trade and industrial hub. Our morning entails a one-hour flight to Nepalgunj. The day’s remainder allows interaction with Terai locals, and exploring options include visiting Royal Bardia National Park and partaking in an elephant safari.
Day 2: Nepalgunj to Jumla, trek to Chere Chaur
Following a night in Nepalgunj, an early morning flight to Jumla awaits. Upon arrival in Jumla, you’ll observe the vivid contrast between the Terai plains and Jumla’s hilly terrain. From Jumla, the trek begins, leading you to Chere Chaur via Khalanga Bazaar on the initial trekking day. Your first night on the trek will be spent in Chere Chaur.
Day 3: Trek from Chere Chaur to Chala Chaur
Continuing the journey from Chere Chaur, the early morning trek advances toward Chala Chaur. Two options for the route are available: one traverses Jaljala Pass, while the other goes through Daphe Langna Pass. Typically, the Jaljala Pass route is taken, necessitating a steep ascent. At the pass’s peak, you’re rewarded with captivating vistas of the Kanjiroba Himal. The path proceeds through various pastures before connecting with the primary Rara Circuit trail. Following this trail leads you to Chala Chaur, at an elevation of 2,980 m.
Day 4: From Chala Chaur to Sinja Valley
Setting off early, you’ll embark on a path tracing the Jaljala River, journeying through various small settlements. After approximately seven hours, of trekking, you’ll arrive at Sinja Valley. Notably, Sinja Valley holds historical importance as the capital of the Khasa Kingdom, governed by the Mallas from the 12th to the 14th centuries. This valley is situated along the banks of the Hima River.
Day 5: Trek from Sinja Valley to Goru Singhe
Following breakfast, the day’s trek commences along the Hima River, with an initial steep ascent. Once past the sharp incline, the terrain becomes more manageable, leading you to Laha Village. Beyond Laha Village, the path continues through forests and over a suspension bridge, ultimately leading to Goru Singhe.
Day 6: Trek from Goru Singhe to Rara Lake
The awaited day arrives as you make your way to Rara Lake. Leaving Goru Singhe behind, your journey leads to Chuchhemara Danda (4,039 m), the highest point of the trek. This vantage point offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas, the stunning Rara Lake, and the lush vegetation of Rara National Park. Progressing further, you’ll pass through Khatyar Khola Camp and several towns, including Murma. Following Murma, the trail moderately ascends to Chappri Village, the hub of Rara National Park. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the tranquility of the magnificent lake, set against the backdrop of pristine, lush landscapes.
Day 7: Exploration and rest day at Rara Lake
Rara, situated at an altitude of 3010 m, stands as Nepal’s largest freshwater lake, boasting turquoise-blue waters that are truly unmatched. A leisurely stroll around the lake unveils a lavishly decorated Mahadev Temple adorned with elephant and peacock carvings. In July or August, a religious ceremony unfolds on the full moon, hosted by the locals. You have the option to explore the lake by canoe or even swim in its refreshing waters. Additionally, a trip to Muldi Viewpoint is a worthwhile excursion.
Day 8: Trek from Rara to Pina via Jhyari
Following the enchanting Rara Lake experience, the return journey begins. Your destination for the day is Pina, reached via Gamgadhi, the administrative center of Mugu. district. Departing from Gamgadhi. The trek continues through dense forests to Jhyari Khola. Ascending through a pine forest, you’ll reach Pina (2,440m).
Day 9: Pina to Chauta via Ghurchi Lagna Pass
Starting from Pina, the trek advances uphill through a dense, vibrant forest. Amidst clearings, north-facing mountain views and captivating landscapes come into sight. The ascent leads to Ghurchi Lagna Pass (3,460m), adorned with prayer flags and chortens, showcasing the Buddhist presence in the area. After the pass, the descent takes you to Chauta, where you’ll find lodging for the night.
Day 10: Trek from Chauta to Tharamara
Leaving Chauta, your route follows the northern banks of Sinja Khola to Kamra, where a prominent overhanging rock stands. This rock is the source of the valuable medicinal mineral silica. Descending further from Sinja Khola, you’ll pass Nyawre Village en route to Tharamara.
Day 11: Tharamara to Jumla
Your final day in the trek region begins at Tharamara. Descending through picturesque surroundings, the trail winds through lush forests adorned with rhododendron, oak, and pine trees. As you advance, you’ll enter a fertile valley and witness the growth of settlements. Passing through villages like Padmara Village, your journey concludes as you reach Jumla.
Day 12: Fly from Jumla back to Kathmandu
Concluding the trek, your final day involves a flight from Jumla to Nepalgunj. Following a brief layover in Nepalgunj, you’ll proceed with a flight to Kathmandu.
Best season
Nature plays its harmonious tune for trekkers in the spring (September–October) and autumn (March–May). These seasons offer pleasant weather, stunning Himalayan reflections in lakes, and vibrant rhododendron blooms, creating a melodious journey.
