In order to protect the Fewa lake, it will be recommended to the Government of Nepal to declare its watershed area as a protected area. In a discussion held with the people's representatives, civil society and stakeholders of the Fewa Reservoir Area by the Greater Watershed Management Center, Gandaki, it has been demanded that the government should immediately declare the area as a protected area and bring conservation programs.
According to Bain Bahadur Adhikari Chhetri, chairman of the District Land and Water Resources Conservation Committee and head of the District Coordination Committee, Kaski, the government has been recommended to declare the area as a protected area in a discussion held in Pokhara on Thursday. Discussions were held with the stakeholders of wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 17 and 22 in the watershed area.
The Supreme Court had directed the government to declare the Fewa Reservoir Area as a protected reservoir area for the protection of the Fewatal on April 3, 2008. The Center has stated that the work of taking suggestions from the reservoir area and getting consent for the declaration has been completed in the first phase before declaring the protected area.
The Chief Coordinating Officer informed that the work of reaching all the wards in the watershed area has been completed after discussing with the locals and taking suggestions. He said, "The government has asked us to complete the work as soon as possible and declare it a protected area." As the first phase of the pre-announcement program has been completed, we will recommend the government soon after the comprehensive district level program. ”
It is said that after the declaration of the protected area, an integrated action plan and systematic work will be taken by the same organization for the management of the overall lake after the declaration of the protected area.
Punya Prasad Poudel, coordinator of the four forts demarcation and demarcation committee of Fewatal, said that his committee would complete the work within three months and would recommend to the landlord to cancel the contaminated registration within the demarcation of the lake. Ward Chairperson of Pokhara-1 Sarada Parajuli said that encroachment of the lake has increased due to weak implementation of recommendations and action plans at different times.
During the discussion, the participants mentioned that all the excavated soil in the winter season would be washed away and filled up in the lake during the monsoon season as road excavation work is being done in the reservoir area without any map and plan development. The area of Fewatal, which was 10 sq km in 1956/57, has been reduced to four sq km. The government has formed a committee to determine and demarcate the four forts of Fewatal.
