On the occasion of Vasant Panchami, the farmers of all Mithilanchal including Mahottari are worshiping plough and bull today.
From generation to generation, farmers across Mithila have a tradition of worshiping plows and bulls in the morning, considering this day as the beginning of agricultural work. According to Rambabu Chowdhury of Jaleshwar Municipality-8, farmers are performing puja in the courtyard by covering it with cow dung, putting flowers, aksheta, abir, rice, laddu, and other things in the courtyard. The bull is bathed and worshiped by wearing new colorful ropes and garlands. After worshiping the plow and the bull, it is customary to plough the fields.
On the occasion of Shri Panchami or Vasant Panchami, farmers prepare prasad by mixing sakhkhar with arava rice, then they complete this pooja by worshiping plows and bulls, then by throwing abir to each other and distributing prasad. Farmers of Mithilanchal believe that farming started from these days. From today, they start plowing their barren fields.
In the villages of Mithilanchal today, hundreds of bulls can be seen running together and waving the plough on the shoulders of the farmers.
“Despite the introduction of tractors, power tillers, and other devices, they cannot reach all the fields easily, and since they cannot cultivate the fields as they want, plows and oxen are the most convenient for farming,” said Kishun Wichha of Jaleshwar-11.
“It is customary for farmers to use newly bought bulls to plough the field for the first time. Farmers these days sharpen their plough, sharpen their spades and sharpen their agricultural tools like sickles and sickles,” said Ganesh Shah of Jaleshwar-6._Rss
