The Maghe Sankranti Mela is being held on Dudhkoshi bank at Rabhunwaghat, a historical place on the border of Khotang and Okhaldhunga.
It takes five days after the occasion of Maghe Sankranti at Dudhkoshi bank in Rabhunwaghat, a historical place on the border of Rawabensi Rural Municipality-3 Lamidanda of Khotang and Chishankhugadhi Rural Municipality-6 of Bhadaure in Khotang.
Before 2007, Mela has been held at the historical place Rabhunwaghat on the occasion of Maghe Sankranti. A Mela has been held twice on Maghe Sankranti and Haribodhini Ekadashi at Rabhunwaghat in Lamidanda in the territory of Khotang.
The existence of Rabhunwaghat, a historical place which is also a commercial center for local residents of Khotang and Okhaldhunga, is disappearing. Dudhkoshi Reservoir hydropower project with 635 MW capacity is being operated from Rabhunwaghat.
It is said that when the Dudhkosi Reservoir project is in operation, the tourists coming to Halesi, a tri-religious place, will be able to take a boat trip to the Reservoir to be built in Rabhunwa. In order to make the Dudhkoshi Reservoir project a success, a local resident of Khotang and central member of CPN (UML) Ramesh Poudel has also formed a concerned society consisting of representatives of three districts.
“On the occasion of Maghe Sankranti, thousands of people flock to Dudhkoshi to bathe. The historic fair of Rabhunwaghat is known as a means of exchanging local wholesale goods from Khotang, Okhaldhunga, and Solukhumbu,” said Baburam Joshi, a local resident, and businessman.
“The Maghe Sankranti Mela, which was postponed for three years due to the spread of the Coronavirus (Covid-19), has been held this year,” said Som Bahadur Majhi, the coordinator of the market management committee and ward member of Lamidanda.
“Khotang and Okhaldhunga police have been mobilized to organize the fair and prevent criminal activities. During the temporary Mela that lasts for five days, the local residents have also organised entertainment programs", said Lamidanda Ward President, Birendra Magar._Rss
