Situated on the north-western side of Kathmandu Valley, Nagarjun Hill—also known as Jamacho Hill—offers one of the capital’s most accessible escapes into nature. Rising to an elevation of about 2,128 metres, it forms part of the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, a protected area known for its rich forests, wildlife and scenic viewpoints. For day-walkers, pilgrims and nature enthusiasts, Nagarjun Hill provides a peaceful contrast to the bustle of the city.
Within a Protected National Park
Nagarjun Hill lies inside the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, which covers a wide area of forested land north of the Kathmandu Valley. The park is home to a diverse range of plants and animals, including deer, monkeys, numerous bird species and many varieties of trees and shrubs. While wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, the forest environment and birdlife are a major attraction for walkers.

A Hike Through Quiet Forest
The hike to the summit typically begins from the Fulbari Gate near Balaju. The ascent takes around two to three hours, depending on pace, and follows a well-marked path through dense woodland. The trail is steep at times but rewards walkers with shade, fresh air and the sounds of birds echoing through the trees.
At the top sits a small monastery and stupa, often referred to as Jamacho Gumba. The hill is visited by both hikers and Buddhist devotees who come to enjoy the tranquillity and pay their respects at the hilltop shrine.
Legends and Local Beliefs
The name “Nagarjun Hill” is traditionally linked to Acharya Nagarjuna, an influential Buddhist philosopher. Local lore suggests that he once meditated in a cave somewhere on the hill, although this connection is based on belief rather than confirmed historical evidence. Today, the site continues to hold spiritual significance for many visitors.
Panoramic Views of the Valley
On clear days, the summit provides extensive views across Kathmandu Valley, with its temples, neighbourhoods and surrounding ridges spread out below. In good weather it is also possible to see distant Himalayan ranges, adding to the hill’s appeal as a scenic viewpoint.
A Convenient Escape Close to the Capital
Only a short distance from central Kathmandu, Nagarjun Hill is one of the city’s best-loved short hikes. Its combination of forest trails, spiritual landmarks and broad vistas makes it an ideal choice for a half-day excursion. Whether one visits for exercise, reflection or simply a breath of fresh mountain air, Nagarjun Hill offers a refreshing retreat within easy reach of Nepal’s capital.
