Sarju Ranjit, Director of Human Resources and Administration in the New Five-Star Hotel Dusit Princess Kathmandu

Sarju Ranjit, Director of Human Resources and Administration in the New Five-Star Hotel Dusit Princess Kathmandu. He joined Dusit Princess Kathmandu on January 1, 2023, and was the second hired staff member after the general manager in a pre-opening hotel.

He worked 31.5 years in Nepal`s leading hotel, Soaltee Oberoi, in 1990. He started his career as a front office assistant. Soaltee, later became an intercontinental hotel group. In 2010, management decided to transfer Mr. Sarju to the Human Resources Department as Assistant Human Resources Manager from Senior Duty Manager. When he took over the Human Resources Department, Soaltee had three strong unions. All three unions were equally powerful, and they brought different issues related to the employees and HR became very busy dealing with them and sorting out the issues. During his tenure, he witnessed lots of ups and downs. Throughout his tenure, he has participated in three successful collective bargaining sessions. He even learned how to win the confidence of unions and employees, and later on, he maintained a great rapport with them and worked together for the betterment of the organization.

During the COVID time, they all worked together. Management has issued the voluntary retirement scheme, and due to the support of all three unions, they have been successful in sending 234 employees on the voluntary retirement scheme, which is the first in any organization. He was the longest-serving HR professional in any unionized organization, serving ten and a half years. Finally, he decided to take voluntary retirement. When he announced this, everyone stopped him from going, including three Union leaders. But he was firm in his decision and took retirement on October 6, 2021. The Chairman of Soaltee, Mr. Dinesh Bahadur Bista, honored him with an appreciation letter on behalf of the board for his contribution to the organization.

How do you see your current role as contributing to your organization and tourism in Nepal?

My current role is very vital for my organization. Our organization carries the legacy of Thai brand Dusit International. Being DHR, I have to make sure that our employees follow the four Dusit graciousness pillars, i.e., personalise service, local connection, well being, and sustainability, so that tourists staying with us can feel different and extend their stay longer. This will help to generate foreign currency and boost tourism in Nepal.

What, in your opinion, needs to be done to help Nepal's tourism industry flourish?

The Nepalese government should closely work with TAAN and HAN and implement their genuine ideas.

What are you passionate about, or what keeps you entertained, motivated, and refreshed?

I am passionate about singing, visiting new destinations (internal and external), and social media, which always keeps me entertained and refreshed.

What is the best thing to do in Nepal that you would suggest to a tourist or visitor?

Nepal is a very beautiful country. Nepal is a country for nature lovers, mountaineers, trekkers, and adventure lovers. Nepal also has a diversity of unique cultures and climates. So, Nepal is capable of attracting all types of tourists.
